LONGEVITY OF DIRECT COMPOSITE RESIN RESTORATIONS IN POSTERIOR TEETH: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Composite resin has been widely used in restorations, both in anterior and posterior teeth, and despite being the main choice among dental surgeons, the factors that determine the longevity of this material are still the subject of study. They may be related to the restorative technique used, the experience of the operator, the type of material used, the position of the tooth in the arch, and the size of the cavity prepared. Patient-related aspects can intervene in this longevity, mainly oral hygiene habits and the level of caries risk. Thus, the incorporation of state-of-the-art adhesives and formulations containing bioactive nanoparticles has shown potential to increase degradation resistance and minimize failures due to microinfiltration, resulting in more durable restorations. In this context, the main agents of restoration failure are secondary caries, followed by fracture of the restorative material. It was concluded that oral hygiene orientation to the patient, due care with the restorative technique, or correct timing of photopolymerization, besides adequate finishing and polishing, can ensure clinical success and provide greater longevity of restorations.
