Abstract

According to the biomedical model, and with the synthesizers of the main current diagnostic manuals, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodivergent condition that is manifested by challenges in communication, social interaction, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Objectives: to problematize the implementation of inclusion policies, seeking to identify the main challenges that autistic students face at the university, covering pedagogical aspects, social issues and the support provided by the institution's accessibility center Materials and Methods: This is an experience report. Results: The work of the Accessibility Center and the support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were essential in the initial reception and in the definition of educational strategies. It was observed that the profile of the student is similar to reports of late entry of neuroatypical patients into higher education, reflecting the difficulties faced since Basic Education. The inclusion of support professionals who take on facilitation and mediation roles has the potential to positively influence the enhancement of social and cognitive skills in individuals with ASD. Considerations: Although Brazilian legislation has advanced in the context of inclusion, it is still possible to observe a gap between the policies, theoretical conceptions and practices adopted in higher education institutions.
